OJAKÜLA KORDON
“ANTI-PASTORAL” IN OJAKÜLA CORDON
"Anti-pastoral" exhibition at the Ojaküla Border Guard Cordon
Being far enough away and isolated, Hiiumaa is a place that has become
synonymous with an idyllic life. Beautiful sea beaches, forests bursting with
life, and peninsulas plunging into the distance are only part of the environment
that creates a hedonistic feeling of life. However, this beautiful sight is overshadowed
by the memory of the island's-militaristic history. Gloomy and ghostly military objects
remind us that the beauty and idyll of the blessed island have come through hard trials.
The purpose of the "Antipastoral" Exhibition, which takes place in the Ojaküla border
guard cordon in Hiiumaa is similar. Keep your finger on the pulse,
as numerous people who enjoy life are arriving on the island to country homes and Sõru
Sound. At a time when the world is on the brink of apocalypse every day, it is human
to get tired of constant doomsday messages. However, it is important to remember
the privilege of being free.
The exhibition "Antipastoral" combines three exhibition projects of the Okapi Gallery,
which focuses on questions about man, power, and nature relations.
In her project "Darien a" Heleliis Hõim examines the lines of power drawn into
the Darien jungle on the border of Panama and Colombia. During his residency
in a jungle village by the Caribbean Sea, the artist was faced with a dystopian scene,
illustrated on the one hand by the local community's connection, and on the other by the
self-destructive and desperate desire of migrants to chase the American Dream and
the apparent prosperity that comes with it. It also points to the deeper problems of
society.
The On The Edge Fest project is this time focused on Georgia, Ukraine, and Latin America,
and explores geopolitical tensions along the border, conflicts related to its neighbors, or
other social issues. What is it like to live on the borders, knowing that your neighbor
is dangerous and there is a risk of losing your home?
The exhibition aims to offer a deep and critical look at world views and problems
that connect global and local issues. This is an exhibition that invites you to think
about freedom or the complex relationship between humans and nature.
The exhibition project has been completed in cooperation with the NGO OKAPI and Pihla Inspiration Farm.
